Kunié Sugiura

Biography

Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1942, Sugiura moved to the United States in 1963 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she first began working with photography. After graduating, she settled in New York in 1967 and has lived and worked there ever since.

Across more than six decades, Sugiura has continuously challenged the conventions of photography through a practice that merges painting, sculpture, and photographic processes. From her early photographic canvases and Photopaintings to her photograms and X-ray works, her oeuvre is defined by a sustained exploration of hybridity—between mediums, cultures, and modes of perception. Her work brings together organic and constructed forms, abstraction and figuration, intimacy and experimentation, creating a singular visual language that has profoundly expanded the field of contemporary photography.

Née à Nagoya, au Japon, en 1942, Sugiura s'installe aux États-Unis en 1963 pour étudier à la School of the Art Institute of Chicago, où elle commence à travailler la photographie. Diplômée, elle s'établit à New York en 1967 et y vit et travaille depuis.
