In the photo series of the same name, Upstream, the subjective experience and perception of the artist becomes a witness to a collective feeling. Private scenes, nature shots, excerpts from the New York Times, portraits of his partner or other artists are mixed in a flow of images that is both poetic and documentary. Moreover, the photographs become examples of Ari Marcopoulos' inexhaustible productivity, highlighting the indispensable role of this medium as the main witness of our time. At the same time, they provide a personal insight into the life and surroundings of Ari Marcopoulos. The juxtaposed pigment prints give an idea of the wealth of images from which the artist selected the 91 photographs on display. The artist's open horizon of experience does not specify hierarchies or structures, but reveals his view of the world and thus always the view of the life of the artist himself. Ari Marcopoulos' image production is extensive and dissolute, but at the same time precise and deliberate. Thus, there are random snapshots, the everyday, but also conceptual games and intra-image references as shown by the newspaper articles or the dating of the photographs. Upstream is an attempt to create something coherent in a continuous flow of visual experiences. Like Marcopoulos's extensive publication activity, they allow him to arrange the images and offer them a framework.
