Kaz Oshiro creates trompe l’oeil objects: at first glance, they look like mere objects of everyday life such as speakers, dumpsters, I-beams or metal suitcases. They are immediately identified by the visitor as ordinary, well-used consumer products. However, these objects reveal themselves to be made out of precisely painted canvas, stretched over a wooden frame and then assembled together. The artist always intentionally leaves one side of the work open to reveal its structure.
Kaz Oshiro’s works are both paintings and sculptures at the same time, highly figurative but also abstract objects: he describes himself as “a still-life painter trying to become an abstract painter”.
