Ministério da Cultura, Bradesco, and Instituto Tomie Ohtake present Sheila Hicks – O que que é isso? (What is this?), an exhibition dedicated to the North American artist Sheila Hicks (Nebraska, United States, 1934), one of the leading international figures in the expansion of textile practices within contemporary art.
The exhibition occupies two of the Institute's galleries, bringing together a broad body of work produced over more than six decades, including historical pieces, recent works, and a new installation created especially for the exhibition.
Developed in close dialogue with Hicks, the exhibition traces her exploration of thread as material, structure, and a form of thought — a practice that crosses the boundaries between painting, sculpture, design, and textile arts. It comprises around 30 works produced over the last six decades, including small weavings, reliefs, sculptures, and installations of architectural scale. The exhibition also includes photographs taken by the artist and by Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain during their travels through Latin America in the late 1950s, along with a group of Andean textiles — key references for the formation and development of the artist's practice.
