In the third and final round of the ‘24 Flags’ project, Kunstmeile Hamburg presents the works of artist Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili. Long a crucial component of Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili’s visual vocabulary, the flowers in this body of work are equally political and poetic, as they are a symbol of resistance in her native Georgia. On April 9th, 1989, a peaceful pro-independence student protest in Tbilisi was met with a violent Soviet military response, and many students were injured and killed. Since then, tulips are laid on the memorial every April in memory of this resistance. Alexi-Meskhishvili's flags are cropped from three photographs of tulips that the artist made by placing flowers directly on negative film and tracing them with finger lights. As such, her photographic process becomes a form of both performance and record.
