Sheila Hicks

Josef Albers Museum. Quadrat Bottrop, Germany
October 12, 2024 – February 23, 2025
In the fall/winter of 2024/25, the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat Bottrop and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf will jointly present the first major retrospective solo exhibition of the American artist Sheila Hicks (*1934) in Germany.
Sheila Hicks’ unique œuvre unfolds in a dynamic interplay of material, color, and space: Large and small-scale wall works, carpets, reliefs, sculptures, and installations reveal the seemingly infinite possibilities within these three dimensions. Hicks has tirelessly explored the question, "What can be done with a thread?" since her studies under Josef Albers at the Yale School of Art in the 1950s. Through her artistic investigations, she has developed a vast array of techniques that continuously challenge and redefine our perception of art and textile, color and structure, object and space.
The exhibition will be presented across two locations—the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf—offering a comprehensive insight into the artist’s body of work:
  • At the Josef Albers Museum, a retrospective spanning over 700 square meters in the award-winning extension by Gigon/Guyer will showcase works from 1955 to 2024, including never-before-seen early paintings from her time studying under Albers. Additionally, early textile pieces, works from her time in Chile, Mexico, and Morocco, designs for major architectural commissions, and her more recent vibrant wall objects, sculptures, and installations will be on view, complemented by sketches and archival materials.

  • The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf will focus on Hicks’ contemporary artistic practice, displaying large-scale, site-specific installations and sculptures. These works will resonate powerfully with the brutalist architecture of the exhibition space and showcase the artist’s latest experiments with materials and form.

With over 250 works spanning all creative periods, this collaborative exhibition provides the first comprehensive overview of Sheila Hicks' multifaceted career in Germany, following her major international exhibitions, including at Centre Pompidou Málaga (2023), Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2023), Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna (2020), Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino, Santiago (2020), and the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas (2019).
The exhibition is supported by the Kunststiftung NRW, the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Kulturstiftung der Länder, and the Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Bottrop.
A comprehensive educational and events program will accompany the exhibition. Additionally, the first extensive German-language publication on Sheila Hicks will be released in conjunction with the show.
